History Of Yogya

 History Of  yogya

Under the shadow of 2914-meter-high mountain, called Mount Merapi, standing Ngayogyakarto Hadiningrat, one of the Mataram kingdom in Java. Now known as the Yogyakarta (Jogja) starting in 1755, when the kingdom of Mataram was divided into the Sultanate of Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo).

Yogyakarta Palace was built by Prince Mangkubumi at the time, and he used the palace as the region's most influential central Java since the 17th century. Kraton remains a center of traditional life and despite the modernization in the 20th century, the palace still exudes the spirit of purity, which is characterized by its culture for centuries.

Yogyakarta is one of the cultural centers of Java. Gamelan music is the view from the past, classical and contemporary, Javanese dance performances very beautiful and intoxicating, leather puppet shows and hundreds of traditional arts that make the visitor enthralled.

Remarkable spirit of life and warmth of this town alone who almost never fade. Contemporary art is also grown in the fertile culture and people of Yogyakarta. ASRI, Academy of Fine Arts, for example, an arts center here, and Yogyakarta has listed her name as an important school of modern painting in Indonesia, which may be illustrated in the figure of impressionist painters, Affandi.

www.baliiku.blogspot.comThis province is one solid area in Indonesia and is the main entrance to the center of Java where this place is geographically located. Stretching from Mount Merapi to the north toward the Indian Ocean in the south. Daily flights connecting Yogyakarta to Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali, as well as train and bus transportation offers the same journey overland route.

Yogyakarta Special Province (abbreviated as Jogja), is one of the 34 provinces in Indonesia. The province is divided into five regional level II, Kodya Yogyakarta, Bantul, Sleman regency, Kulon Progo Regency, and Gunung Kidul Regency. Yogyakarta Area about 3186 square km, with a total population of 3,226,443 (Statistics in December 1997). The province is famous as a city of culture and education and is a tourist destination.

Based on history, before 1755 in Surakarta is the capital of Mataram Kingdom. After the agreement Gianti (Palihan Nagar) in 1755, Mataram was divided into two kingdoms: Kasunanan Hadiningrat and Surakarta Sultanate Ngayogyakarto Hadiningrat. Following custom, the Prince Mangkubumi, brother of His Majesty Pakubuwono II, was crowned as King Ngayogyakarto Hadiningrat. Then he referred to as the lane I. In 1813, under British rule, the separation occurred for the third kingdom of Mataram-time. Notokusumo prince, son of Hamengkubuwono I, was crowned as Prince Paku Alam I. Separated his kingdom from the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.

When the Republic of Indonesia was established on August 17, 1945, which is symbolized by the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Ngayogyakarto Pakualaman Hadiningrat and fused as one of the provinces in Indonesia where the lane was appointed as governor IX and Sri Paku Alam VIII as deputy governor. Although the province of DIY has a relatively small area, but is rich in tourist attractions. Visitors can find various kinds of arts and performing arts results are very interesting and amazing.

As an arts and cultural center of Java, there are several kinds of tourism in Yogyakarta. This is the reason why people refer Yogyakarta as the cradle of Javanese culture. And for lovers of mountains, beaches or beautiful scenery, Yogyakarta is also providing some room for it. The province is also recognized as an attractive place for researchers, geologists, and volcanology experts speleogi refers to the existence of caves in limestone areas and active volcanoes. In the southern district of Gunung Kidul is the end of the sea, where there are few marine fossils in the limestone as proof.

For archaeologists, Yogyakarta is very interesting because at least there are 36 temples / historical sites here. There are few relics of civilization from the 9th century. One of them, the temples of Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple and the most famous in Indonesia. Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple, listed as one of "seven wonders of the world." Borobudur can be achieved within one hour from the city, just 42 km northwest of Yogyakarta. On

the way to Borobudur, can visit and Pawon Mendut. Mendut are places of worship, with the existence of Gautama Buddha statues inside. Some rituals are still held in Yogyakarta, and is still carried out till now.

Beautiful environment, traditional architecture, social life, and rituals make Yogyakarta became the most interesting places to visit. Arts and culture like traditional gamelan music and traditional dance will always remind the audience will be the life of Yogyakarta, a few centuries ago. Development of modern technologies developed in Indonesia and in Yogyakarta, was developed in harmony with the customary and traditional rites.

As the name implies, Yogyakarta Province is truly special. The people are very friendly. This form of life and their behavior. They like the traditional sports, archery as a hobby and game birds are also very fond of turtledove. They also believe that people can enjoy life by listening to the chirping of birds. Traditional archery competitions are always held to commemorate the birth of the king, called the "Wiyosan Dalem". And at the time of lane X was born, this tradition was also carried out.

Given the wide range of indigenous arts and traditional ceremonies are still ongoing, Yogyakarta is also known as "living museum of Java", which is reflected in all forms of the traditional stuff of vehicles, architecture, markets, souvenir centers, museums, tourist attractions and many options in Yogyakarta.

YOGYAKARTA

Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Black)Yogyakarta or simply Yogya, is one of the foremost cultural centers of Java. Located at the foot of the active Merapi volcano, Yogyakarta was in the 16th and 17th centuries the seat of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataram., from which present day Yogyakarta has inherited the best of traditions. The city itself has a special charm which seldom fails to captivate the visitor.
This province is one of the most densely populated areas of Indonesia. The city came into being in 1755, after the division of Mataram into the Sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo). Gamelan, classical and contemporary Javanese dances, the wayang kulit leather puppet theater and other expressions of traditional art will keep the visitor spellbound. Local craftsmen excel in the arts of batiks, silver and leather work.
The Sultan's palace is the hub of Yogya's traditional life and despite the advance of modernity, it still emanates the spirit of refinement which has been the hallmark of Yogya's art for centuries. Next to the traditional, contemporary art has found fertile soil in Yogya's culture oriented society. ASRI, the Academy of Fine Arts is the center of arts and Yogya itself has given its name to an important school of modern painting in Indonesia, perhaps best personified by the famed Indonesian impressionist, the late Affandi.
Yogya is often called the main gateway to the center of Java where it is geographically located. It stretches from Mount Merapi to the Indian Ocean. There is daily air service to Yogya from Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali as well as regular train service and easy accessibility by road.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace
The palace court with its grand and elegant Javanese architecture lies in the center of the city. It was founded by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755. The Prince was then called Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono
I. He chose the right location of the compound between the Winongo River and the Code River. The palace stretches out from north to south.
The front yard is called alun-alun Utara (the North Square), and the back yard is called Alun-alun Selatan (the South Square).
The layout of the buildings shows that the Palace, the commemorative column and Mount Merapi lie in one line.
The palace meeting hall is called the Pagelaran, where formal meetings of palace officials are held, while the "Manguntur Tingkil" hall is the place where the Sultan is seated.
The palace visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of the kraton in former times by visiting the life-size diorama of wedding ceremonies on the palace meeting hall, performed by puppets which are intentionally arranged to create such an atmosphere. Sets of Javanese musical instruments, antiques and heirlooms have made the palace of Yogyakarta worth to visit.
Water Castle
Built in 1758 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I just west of the kraton, part of this pleasure garden and castle is at present no more than an intriguing collection of ruins, pools, arches and underground passages enclosed by massive walls, however, the central courtyard with the nymph-baths has been restored.
The Water Castle is located in the older part of the city within walking distance from the Bird Market. A number of batik workshops line the avenue leading to the pleasure garden's entrance.
Imogiri
Imogiri is the official cemetery of the royal descendants from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The royal graveyard is located on a hilltop, reachable by 345 stone steps leading to it.
Imogiri is about 17 kms southeast of Yogyakarta and easily accessible by bus or car. The tombs are built within three main courtyards.
Entry into the smaller courtyards housing the tombs of the princes is allowed only on Monday 09.00 - 12.00 or Friday 13.00 - 16.00. Traditional Javanese dress has to be worn, which however can be hired on the spot at a modest fee. The cemetery is closed during the Moslem month of Ramadhan.
Prambanan Temple
This magnificent Shivaite temple derives it name from the village where it is located. Locally known as the Loro Jonggrang Temple, or the Temple of the "Slender Virgin", it is the biggest and most beautiful Hindu temple in Indonesia.
Seventeen kilometers east of Yogyakarta, it is believed to have been built by King Balitung Maha Sambu in the middle of the ninth century. Its parapets are adorned with a bas-reliefs depicting the famous Ramayana story.
The first open-air theater on the southern side of the temple was built in 1960 and the new theater on the western side of the temple in 1988. During full moon evenings in the month from May to October, the Ramayana ballet is performed right here. The temple complex of Prambanan lies among green fields and villages. It has eight shrines, of which the three main ones are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
The main temple of Shiva rises to a height of 130 feet and houses the magnificent statue of Shiva's consort, Durga.
Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Blue)Museum Sonobudoyo
This museum, founded in November 1935 and designed by the Dutch architect Kersten, is built in traditional Javanese architecture. It exhibits weapons, leather and wooden puppets of wayang theater, masks, statues, textiles, curios and old Javanese gamelan instruments. The museum is situated on the northern side of the city's main square in front of the Sultan's Palace.
Kotagede
Kotagede, about five kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta, is a neat little town which was once the seat of the mighty Mataram empire. In this old palace town with its walled-in houses, the graves of the first rulers of Mataram are still to be found. Since the 1930s, however, Kotagede has become famous for being the center of the Yogya silverwork industry. Kotagede is easily reached by "andong", the four wheeled horse-drawn cart, by taxi, bus, or car.
There are a number of workshops where visitors are welcome to watch silver being transformed into beautiful works of art known as "Yogya Silver".
Affandi Museum
On the main road between the airport and the city stands the Affandi Museum (1907 - 1990) in a lush garden next to his peculiar private home on stilts. He was Indonesia's foremost impressionist painter who built a private museum for his own paintings and of those of his daughter Kartika. Affandi's grave (died in May 1990) lies in the backyard next to the museum.
Kasongan
Southwest of Yogyakarta lies the village of Kasongan, known for its artistic pottery and earthenware. Guidance from contemporary Indonesian artists has turned Kasongan earthenware into works of art which can be bought inexpensively at art shops all over Java.
Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam® CamcorderBatik Research Center

A seaside resort 27 km south of Yogyakarta on the Indian Ocean. According to Javanese mythology, the Goddess of the South Seas, Nyai Loro Kidul or Ratu Kidul, was married to Panembahan Senopati who founded the Mataram Kingdom. Since that time, every year the sultans of Yogyakarta have made special offerings to her in a beach-side ceremony called "Labuhan".

Orchesta Music

Gamelan, the Javanese Orchestra

The SuburbsGamelan is surely not a foreign music. It has been popular in most continents and has created new music integration, for example jazz-gamelan, has born institution as learning space and gamelan music expression and it has produced famous gamelan musicians. Gamelan music instrument can now be enjoyed in various parts of the world, but Yogyakarta is the right place to enjoy it since you can enjoy the original version of gamelan.
Gamelan that grows in Yogyakarta is Javanese gamelan, one form of gamelan that is different from Balinese gamelan or Sundanese gamelan. Javanese gamelan has softer and slower tones; it is different from Balinese gamelan that is very dynamic and Sundanese gamelan that is melodious with domination of the voice of seruling or traditional bamboo flute. The difference is just natural since Java has its own view of life that is expressed in its gamelan music melody.
Tin Can TrustThe Javanese view of life that is expressed in its gamelan music is the harmony of physical and spiritual lives, harmony in talking as well as behaving in order not to create explosive expression and to realize people tolerance. The real form of harmony in Javanese gamelan music is the moderate play of rebab string, voice harmony of kenong, saron kendang and gambang and the voice of gong ate each closing of the melody.
There is no definite history of gamelan existence. The development of gamelan music is predicted to begin from the existence of kentongan, rebab, tap on the mouth, rubs on string and thin bamboo until the introduction of metal music instruments. Further development after named by gamelan, this music was used to accompany leather puppet show and dances. Later it became independent music and it was completed with voices of female singers called sinden.
Need You NowA set of gamelan consists of several music instruments; some of them are drum called kendhang, rebab, and celempung, gambang, gong and bamboo flute or seruling. The main components composing the gamelan music instruments are bamboo, metal, and wood. Each of the instrument has its own function in a gamelan music show, for example the gong functioning to close the long music melodies and to give balance after the music was previously decorated by Javanese music melodies.
Javanese gamelan is music with pentatonic melodies. A complete gamelan play consists of two cycles, namely slendro and pelog. Slendro has 5 melodies per octave, namely 1 2 3 5 6 [C- D E+ G A] with small interval difference. Pelog has 7 melodies per octave namely 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 [C+ D E- F# A B] with big interval difference. Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers (Deluxe)Gamelan music composition was created with some rules, namely consists of some cycles and pathet, confined by one gong and the melodies were created in a unit consisting of 4 melodies.
You can see gamelan as an independent music performance or a companion of a dance or performance arts such as leather puppet show and ketoprak. As an independent performance, gamelan music is usually combined with the voice of the Javanese singers (male singers are called wiraswara and female singers are called waranggana or sinden). Gamelan music performance can be classic or contemporary. One form of contemporary gamelan is jazz-gamelan as a combination of music with pentatonic and diatonic melodies.
One of the places in Yogyakarta where you can see gamelan performance is Yogyakarta Kingdom. On Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. gamelan is performed as an independent music performance. On Saturdays at the same hours, gamelan is performed as companion of leather puppet show, while on Sundays at the same hours, gamelan accompanies Javanese traditional dance. Please come to Bangsal Sri Manganti to see the performance. Meanwhile, in order to see older gamelan music instrument, you can go to other hall of the kingdom that is located a little further at the back.
